Don't overlook the art of letterspacing. Consider Charlotte Howarth's welcome sign at St Paul's. If we take the letters in pairs or groups of three, there seems little logic to the spacing between them. Why, for example, is the R in 'CATHEDRAL' almost touching the A but so far from the D? Yet the inscription as a whole is perfectly balanced.
