Colouring in a 500-year old map reveals hidden details.
Great stuff Matt and thank you. I've got Cross's New Plan of London 1835 on my wall but that would be a huge endeavour!!
Thank you. V interesting
I'm intrigued by what appears to be a Bus Lane down the side of Bow church... bring on the gazetteer!
Haha. It actually says Bao Lane, after the medieval practice of selling bao buns down there ;-)
The Copperplate has some fairly eccentric spellings to modern eyes (it least, where you can actually read the labels).
I love old maps and I've so enjoyed these articles on the Copperplate Map. It's wonderful how the colour brings so many details to life! I'm looking forward to your work on John Stow's Survey of London.
Thanks Deborah! I've got a few other follow-ups planned, as well as John Stow's London. Watch this space, as they say.
Thank you!! Never been to London but hope to live there one day. This map is worth hanging on the wall :)
